Xbox 360 wireless controller with Play & Charge Kit

Post by Jonathan »

EDIT: These links are out-of-date now - see Primal's post below for the latest ones

This is the most common problem and it has nothing to do with Xpadder

When you connect an Xbox 360 wireless controller to your PC using the Play & Charge cable then Xpadder cannot see it. Why? Because neither can Windows!

The Play & Charge cable only supplies the controller with power. It does not send any data from the controller to the PC nor does it turn your wireless controller into a wired controller.
Even when you use the Play & Charge cable with your Xbox 360 console, the controller is still communicating with your console wirelessly. The Play & Charge cable is for power only.

To use an Xbox 360 wireless controller with Windows you need to use a Wireless Gaming Receiver. This allows Windows to see and communicate with your wireless controller wirelessly and Xpadder will then be able to see it too.

I can see why it is a common problem. It seems such an obvious thing to do... connect a cable from your controller to the PC. It SHOULD work but it doesn't.

i guess thats another thing MS over looked when building the xbox 360 aside from not including the battery from the start

The links doesn't work anymore.

Here are new ones:
Xbox360 Wireless Controller
PlayCharge Kit
Wireless Receiver

The Wireless Receiver seems not to be sold individually by Microsoft anymore, but it is still available at the Amazon Marketplace (at least in US, UK and Germany) and Ebay.

Sounds like a driver issue we already had once. There was a part of the driver missing. So the controller was visible in the Game Controller Control Panel and worked with some games, but on the other hand it didn't worked with other games and Xpadder.

Try following:
1. Open the Window Device Manager
2. Right click on the entry Microsoft "Common Controller for Windows Class->XBox360 Wireless Receiver For Windows Class" (for the wired version "Common Controller for Windows Class->Xbox360 Controller for Windows") and click on "Uninstall"
3.Reconnect the controller
Windows will now search online for a new driver and install it. Now Xpadder should be able to detect your controller.

It worked ? Thanks, this program is awesome ! Playing SNES and TurboGraphx16 games on emulators you realise that the Dpad on the SNES pad was way better than the one on the XBOX360 Controller...
