Analog throttle

Post by TheRack »

Hi good people,

My name is Marc (alias TheRack), I'm new here I just bought Xpadder which seem to be a great program, I hope it can do what I need. I tried several configurations and quickly looked at the posts of this forum but couldn't find my answer, so here is my need :

I want to use my "T.Flight Hotas X" throttle with the game "Auran Trainz Simulator". I want the throttle to be like a simple train throttle, with a neutral zone at the middle. Pushing forward will increment the acceleration, moving it back to neutral will decrement the acceleration, pushing it back will increment the brakes, moving it back to neutral will decrement the brakes, all this with analog zones and progressive steps. And this is how Auran Trainz Simulator handles it with the numpad keyboard keys :

Increment acceleration : "8"
Decrement acceleration : "2"
Increment Brake : "9"
Decrement brake : "3"

There are 8 steps of acceleration/brakes. I want my analog throttle to simulate the steps, so how many times the "8-2-9-3" keys have been pushed. So :

- moving my throttle up from neutral to half will result as doing this : 8888
- moving my throttle up from half to full will result as doing this : 8888
- moving my throttle up from neutral to full will result as doing this : 88888888
- moving my throttle up from neutral to 12% of the throttle will result as doing this : 8
- moving my throttle up from neutral to 25% of the throttle will result as doing this : 88
- and so on...

- moving my throttle from full to half will result as doing this : 2222
- moving my throttle from half to neutral will result as doing this : 2222
- moving my throttle from full to neutral will result as doing this : 22222222
- and so on...

Then the same should be done down with the "9" and "3" keys...
I should be able to configure the 8 steps I have in Auran Trainz Simulator. Each step means one key hit.

How can I achieve this with Xpadder ? As I could'nt try Xpadder before buying it, I hope this is possible.
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards,
TheRack.

It may be possible if there is a key to return the throttle to neutral. I actually have Trainz but not yet loaded on this laptop. I'll have to investigate.

The manual of this games says that NumPad5 is for throttle idle.

But we've got a problem here. In principal I would also say that it should work, but the sequences doesn't trigger with the current Nightly Build and stable release. I am sure it did work sometimes. :?
I will check out some older versions for this later.

For others to try it out:
Stick1; up; 50%

Code: Select all

;--- Xpadder Profile Data ---
DataType=Profile
Version=2011.07.25
Name=(Untitled profile)
KeyTapTime=1
Set1Stick1UpSlots=DISTANCE ZONE 50%,5,PAUSE 0.01s,8,PAUSE 0.01s,8,PAUSE 0.01s,8,PAUSE 0.01s,8

Older versions don't make it it working. According to this topic I did suppose that Sequences in Distance Zones did work, but only not if there is only one key press. Apparently Sequences principally don't work within Distance Zones.

But I have a workaround for this, using the turbo. I don't know how sensitive the game acts with the turbo that resets the speed value to idle and back to the selected value every second, that needs practical tests. Make sure that the slider is the left trigger in the Xpadder layout.

Code: Select all

;--- Xpadder Profile Data ---
DataType=Profile

Here's what I came up with:

Theory of operation: within +/-12% of center the throttle will be at neutral. Each 12% distance up will add [8] throttle up, this is done by in each 12% the throttle will return to neutral and the appropriate number of [8] pressed. I added a hold at the begining of the sequence so if you throw the throttle past a notch it won't screw up the sequence where the throttle stops (I'm sure you wouldn't do this as it would be poor technique ;) ). Down works the same but adds breaking [3] instead of throttle.

Make sure to change the key tap time to .01 seconds in the profile settings to make it more responsive.

Did you test it? As it isn't working for me, only the first sequence will be triggered.

Hi people,

I thank you all very much in advance for your help. I have no time to test my throttle during the week, but I will this week-end and make you a feedback. Can't wait to test it...

Kind regards,

Hi people.

I made tests but cound't have any of the profiles to work, they seem to be empty when loaded in Xpadder (By the way, I wonder why there are no "2" and "3" keys in the profiles, are those two keys are necessary to decrement the acceleration and the brakes...). I also tried on my own with the distance zones but it doesn't work either.

What I don't undestand is the fact that my throttle seems to be configurable as a button. But I would better configure it like a throttle. I wonder if there is a guide somewhere ?

Kind regards,
TheRack.

A slider is a analog axis, so it shouldn't be possible to configure it as a button.
For my profile you have to configure the slider a left trigger and for SGTCableDogs profile you have to configure it as stick2 horizontal axis.

We don't need to decrease the speed. Keypad 5 sets the speed back to idle and then it will be increased to the respective level (the same for the brakes).

Hi people,

I could finally test both configurations, but unfortunately, both are just very far from the desired result. According to Primal Fear's post and to this topic, it seems Xpadder uses throttle only as buttons with one key hit for a push and is not configurable as an range of possibilities (Jonathan : "By design buttons are ignored once a sequence has finished to prevent it repeating"). Jonathan said it is a bug and this topic doesn't mention any fix. So can Xpadder really handle what I need to achieve ?

By the way, when you're driving your car, when you're pressing the acceleration pad at 100% to make your car accelerate at its maximum rate, then you release the pressure on the pad to decrease the acceleration, it's exactly what the "2" key does. And the same with the "3" key with the brakes. So they are necessary. Don't confuse "speed decrease" and "acceleration decrease".

Kind regards,
TheRack.

That's a problem for the sequences (Hold and Release Zones have their own problems), you can normally only put single assignments in each Distance Zone.
My workaround for that is the turbo, it sends a on-pulse every second so the currently selected Distance Zone will be triggered. That brings the problem that each second the speed or brake value will be idled and increased to the selected value, even if you do not move the slider.
That could cause that you train moves jerky, but I hope that this doesn't occur because of the fast key presses. Also the response time of the slider is affected, in the worst case it needs this one second to update the distance zone.
You can experiment with the turbo time. The lower, the higher is the possibility that the train moves jerky. And the higher, the higher is the response time.

TheRack wrote:By the way, when you're driving your car, when you're pressing the acceleration pad at 100% to make your car accelerate at its maximum rate, then you release the pressure on the pad to decrease the acceleration, it's exactly what the "2" key does. And the same with the "3" key with the brakes. So they are necessary. Don't confuse "speed decrease" and "acceleration decrease".
If I interpret "Idle" correctly (keypad 5 resets the acceleration to zero), then we do with the profile something that would be totally crazy a real vehicle. We release the gas pedal completely and then we press it again to the wished position, and that only in max. 0.26 seconds.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
I also made a new profile, it also uses stick2 horizontal axis (like the profile of SGTCableDog) as the trigger would be off when you move the slider to zero to brake hard. So no input, no braking.
I have also used the buttons WS and QA, as the Keypad gets problematic when you press Shift or if you have Num disabled.
Attention: The loaded profile gives a continuous input. So it a good idea to load and unload it together with the game via the AutoProfile feature. Configure a entry for the game and a default entry with an empty profile to unload the profile when closing the game.

Hi,

I got it finally to work like you explained it, (thanks a lot for your help :) ) and Trainz react quite good to those fast "idle and forward again" actions. On this basis, I tried 3 different approaches offered by the game to make realistic acceleration and brake. Unfortunately, none is really good playable for the brakes, because of stupid keyboard configuration that cannot be changed.

So the most playable approach is this one :

Code: Select all

;--- Xpadder Profile File ---
DataType=Profile
Version=2011.06.24

[Profile Settings]
KeyTapTime=1

[Set Settings]

[Assignments]
Set1TriggerLeftSlots=NumPad 5,NumPad 9,DISTANCE ZONE 20%,NumPad 5,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,DISTANCE ZONE 10%,NumPad 5,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,DISTANCE ZONE 10%,NumPad 5,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,DISTANCE ZONE 10%,NumPad 5,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,DISTANCE ZONE 10%,NumPad 5,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,DISTANCE ZONE 10%,NumPad 5,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,DISTANCE ZONE 10%,NumPad 5,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,DISTANCE ZONE 10%,NumPad 5,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 8
Set1TriggerLeftTurbo=1
Set1TriggerLeftTurboRate=30
Set1TriggerRightSlots=NumPad 5,NumPad 9,DISTANCE ZONE 20%,NumPad 9,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 6,DISTANCE ZONE 40%,NumPad 9,PAUSE 0.01s,NumPad 3
Set1TriggerRightTurbo=1
Set1TriggerRightTurboRate=30
With this approach, the acceleration is good, but, the braking is a toggle, what is very stupid.

There was another approach where brakes could be done like acceleration, with 8 steps. The only things is that they need to be activated with the "C" key, which is a toogle key. It means pressing it once will make your train brake, pressing it once again will make your train acceleration again. It's a toogle between brake and accelerate. So is there a possibility, when drawing the throttle, to make the "C" pressed only once ? And then the "C" key should be pressed once when pushing the throttle, but ONLY IF THE "C" KEY WAS ALREADY PRESSED ONCE WHILE BRAKING ? This seems impossible to me.

*brainstorm*

Kind regards and thanks again for the help, we're getting forward.
TheRack.

I would only adjust the braking effort with the slider and activate and deactivate the brakes with a button on the slider. If you want to brake while holding the button and then release the brake when releasing the button, you need to configure it like this.

Hold Zone 0.01; C;Hold Zone 0.01;Release Zone 0.01; Pause 0.01; C
