How do I create a Controller Image?
How do I create a Controller Image?
First check the Controller Images Forum to see if an image for your controller already exists.
If not, here's how to create one.
First of all you need a paint program - see the replies for advice on good freeware recommendations
The bottom line
Xpadder Controller Images are 512x256 BMP files
Xpadder can only open uncompressed 256/16m colour BMPs but you CAN copy and paste the contents of any format directly into the Controller Settings window (using the Image options)
Xpadder uses the colour magenta (RGB:255,0,255) for transparency
How to create
1) Download an image of your controller from the internet. Alternatively, you can take a photo of your own controller or draw it directly!
2) Resize the image so that it is 256 pixels high. If the new image is now more than 512 wide then undo that resize and resize the image again but 512 pixels wide
3) If the new image is 256 pixels high then you need to expand the canvas to 512 wide (centering the image). If the new image is 512 wide then you need to expand the canvas to 256 high (with the image at the bottom)
4) Fill any white space with the colour magenta (see above) using a tolerance value to remove any off-white pixels
5) Copy the image and paste into the Controller Settings window (using the Image options). Look at the main Xpadder to test how it looks
6) Save the image as an uncompressed BMP for personal use
7) Upload to an image hosting site and post the link given into the Controller Images Forum

Whats gimp like compared to photoshop?
Re: How do I create a Controller Image?
Gimp is lighter on features. But powerfull in the right hands. I made the animated forum icons in gimp.

i perfer paint .net
Re: How do I create a Controller Image?
Paint.NET is the ideal one to suggest here:
- More lightweight than GIMP (smaller download, program opens faster)
- Easier to use than GIMP (bit like MS paint, most people will find it much easier)
- Every feature you need and more (definitely enough to make controller images, almost as many as GIMP)
- Free and open source (I think it only works on windows - but so does Xpadder, right?

Re: How do I create a Controller Image?
If you use Paint.net, you have to switch from "Normal Blending" (filled glass bulb) to "Override" (empty glass bulb). Otherwise you will get massive pink bleeding.Jonathan wrote:4) Fill any white space with the colour magenta (see above) using a tolerance value to remove any off-white pixels
Maybe you can add this as a note, Jonathan.
It is actually no browser plugin, it's a stand alone program.FARSTRIDER wrote:only problem some people might have is how to install pluginsmgowen wrote:Paint.NET is the ideal one to suggest here:

Also I have to affirm that it's the best program to create Xpadder controller images.
- Gimp is totally overfilled with useless functions for creating a controller image
MS Paint doesn't have a tolerance setting, so it either fills to much or to less
Also MS Paint has no way to adjust the selected area, after selecting an area you can only reselect it

Re: How do I create a Controller Image?
Ah, these plugins.
Well, you don't need them anyways. Paint.net in is standard version has absolutely everything you could need to create a controller image.

Re: How do I create a Controller Image?
The controller image is not necessary, it's just to make the user interface more visual. But you can also make your layout without a image in the background or with a drawing made directly in Xpadder.

Re: How do I create a Controller Image?
Yes. You just need to create the layout (if with or without a image) and to assign the keys.
BTW: is this your controller?
http://www.ionaudio.de/system/files/ima ... /gopad.png
I would make you a controller image with that image.

Now there is the same for approving images.

Re: How do I create a Controller Image?
I have created a new controller image, the old one had invalid dimensions. Correctly resizing it would make it working, but the magenta background has been made with blending so there will be a magenta edging visible in Xpadder.
And BTW: You want to "download" the image. That you have said uploading caused a little confusion for me as it is also possible to submit new controller images to the DataBase.

It looks a little bit chewed on the right side, that because all images I could find where .jpg's and .jpg breaks color transitions and tones. I made some adjustments to the worst pixels, but I see no way how to make it perfect.

Oh wow thanks man!! And it's cool this will work Good quality pics are indeed hard to come by.
Re: How do I create a Controller Image?
what he said ^ the image is just to make the layout look like your controller, I'm now using an xbox 360 air flo controller to play eso, but my image is from an air flo controller to the ps3 lol, really it's just cosmetics. If it's not a concern to you. You can just skip the image phase of the controller setup an go directly to sticks, then buttons, etc... just name your buttons after you place them in the program an it shouldn't be any different, the functionality stays the same.Primal Fear wrote:The controller image is not necessary, it's just to make the user interface more visual. Added the 4 paddles on the rear. If the placement is no good let me know.
Re: How do I create a Controller Image?
Sure would be nice if someone could write a simple 5 minute tutorial on using paint.net.
I know how to resize the image
I know how to set the file format to bmp
I know how to set the RGB levels of 255,0,255
I DONT KNOW HOW TO CHANGE THE BACKGROUND TO MAGENTA

Re: How do I create a Controller Image?
You need to paint in the magenta. Start by erasing everything around target image than use the paint pail or bucket whatever you want to call it to fill in the most you can than the spots that don't get filled in use the brushes to get them after that to get best result I zoom all the way in and do the touch ups around the edges of target image with the pencil pixel by pixel.gbrandon wrote:Sure would be nice if someone could write a simple 5 minute tutorial on using paint.net.

Re: How do I create a Controller Image?
I'm not sure where you are getting that idea from, but it is incorrect. Paint.NET is a generic paint program like Gimp or MS Paint. See the features here.godsgrace73 wrote:Paint.net is for film and theatrical special effects and costs. Gimp is a free download.
And Paint.NET is free... here, try this download from their website.
