Sid Meier's Pirates! (X360)

Post by Kloreep »

This was not an easy one to create a layout for, but I'm pretty happy with the results. After choosing a name and settings and actually starting the game, I find myself reaching for the mouse very rarely - mostly for changing filters in the map screen. Note that you will have to copy over the mappings for fencing in your Keypad.ini, making it impossible to play that mini-game with the number pad (otherwise, keyboard control remains intact so you'll have the option).

The layout simply can't be perfect with a game designed so thoroughly for keyboard + mouse. I was hoping to avoid having to switch layouts to do dancing & fencing, but it seems the game's keypad.ini will not accept "Enter" or "Shift" as a key for fencing. (Dancing keymapping may have the same limitation, but I haven't checked.) If anyone knows of a way to get around this limitation with the game's Keypad.ini, the 3rd layout that you currently have to toggle into for these two game modes could be eliminated. This profile with a 3rd layout is the best I'm able to do given the aforementioned keymapping limitation.

Designed for the XBox 360 controller with XInput, but it may well work with other controllers of similar design - I don't have any on which I can test it, but Xpadder looks to be pretty compatible.

Replace the dueling section of your Keypad.ini with this. (My added comments, and the names for the assignments, should help you restore it to working with the number pad if you want to go back.)

Code: Select all

;
; Commands for dueling
[Duel]
Pause_P = P
Thrust_Num4 = Num4
Parry_Num5 = Num6	;Was Num5
Chop_Num7 = Num1	;Was Num7
Slash_Num1 = Num3	;Was Num1
Jump_Num8 = Num8
Duck_Num2 = Num2
Taunt_Num6 = Num5	;Was Num6
Inis can be opened and edited with any text editor, like Notepad or Wordpad. You'll find Keypad.ini in My Documents\My Games\Pirates\

Note: If some of the controls are not working, make sure Num Lock is off. Remember, Xpadder is making the game think you're using the number pad.
Remember to switch in and out of the layout for dancing and fencing when necessary using L-Button.

General Controls
-Start button to pause/unpause
-Back button to open main menu or close an open menu (only button that will close some screens, e.g. Taverns. This is the Escape key.)
-Shoulder Buttons switch layouts
---Hold R-Button to use L-Stick as a number pad and Right Stick as a mouse. (Including clicking R-Stick to hit the left mouse button.) Also used for Land Battle commands (see below)
---Click L-Button to toggle Fencing/Dancing mode. (This is only meant for those game types, and is the only layout in which you can control those game types.) Click L-Button again to return to normal layout. Controller will rumble slightly when switiching modes.

Menus
-L-Stick to navigate most menus; A to confirm and/or close; B to select and/or close without saving. (A is the Enter key, B the Space key.)
-Dpad left/right to switch menu screens
-Y to abandon a ship in Fleet Status menu
-L-Trigger to rename a ship in Fleet Status menu (doesn't work with flagship for some reason)

Navigation at Sea
-L-Stick left & right to steer, up and down to change sails
-R-Stick up/down to zoom in/out. Click to change camera view
-Dpad left/right to open menu screens
-X to initiate combat
-B to bombard shore targets
-Hold R-Button to use Dpad Right to Quicksave and Dpad Left to Quickload

Sea Battle
-L-Stick left & right to steer, up and down to change sails
-R-Stick up/down to zoom in/out. Click to change camera view
-X or B to fire
-A to cycle ammo types
-OR Dpad to set ammo type (grape/chain/round mapped to Left/Up/Right)

Land Expedition
-L-Stick to move and turn
-Click R-Stick to toggle spyglass; hold R-Button to use R-Stick as cursor
-X to return to ship

Fencing
-IMPORTANT: Hit L-Button to toggle Fencing mode; hit L-Button again when the fight is over
-L-Trigger to attack low (Slash), R-Trigger to attack high (Chop), X to Thrust
-A to dodge low (Duck), Y to dodge high (Jump), B to Parry
-R-Button to Taunt

Dancing
-IMPORTANT: Hit L-Button to toggle Dancing mode; hit L-Button again when done
-Y Marche Forward, A Marche Backward
-X Glisse Left, B Glisse Right
-Triggers to Pirouette
Note on Pirouettes: Tap on the side your character should move to. From your perspective, this is the opposite of the side of the screen toward which your partner indicates! (But the same side on which she gestures - you're facing each other, so her right hand is on your left.) You could switch the Pirouette keys around in Keypad.ini if you would rather tap the side on which she offers her hand. After trying both, I thought it felt better to have Pirouetting in sync with the direction your character moves.

Land Battle
-In general, hold R-Button to make commands
-Hold R-Button to move with L-Stick
-While holding R-Button, hold L-Trigger to change facing with L-Stick
-Click L-Stick to change target
-X to fire
-R-Button + Y to go to next unit
-B to skip unit's turn
-Hold R-Button and then L-Button (or R-Button and R-Trigger) to bring up miscellaneous command menu. (necessary to use Retreat, Show Grid, Center Unit commands. Remember that Y, B, and X can do the other things in this menu.)

Sneaking Through Town
-Left stick to move & turn self
-Hold R-Trigger to run

---Mouse only---
These will not work via the pad, unless you hold R-Button to use R-Stick as the cursor:
-Selecting & viewing videos of achievements in Personal Status screen
-Hide or show Events/Romance/Soldiers/Wealth filters in World Map screen
-Pirate-O-Pedia: Basic navigation to an entry works using L-Stick, BUT:
---Cannot select or use Previous/Next/Back/Forward/Home navigation buttons without cursor
-----Therefore, cannot back out of entry without closing the entire 'pedia unless using cursor

---Unimplemented controls---
A few land battle controls (Retreat, Show Grid, Center Unit) are missing from R-Button layout and must be accessed by cumbersome R-Button + L-Button/R-Trigger + L-Stick method

I'm going to try this out this evening! I love Pirates but the dancing controls infuriate me. It's the only aspect of the game I don't enjoy, and it also keeps me from getting higher scores (and hurts my chances with the ladies). Hopefully this does the trick!

Thanks again!
