Mass Effect 1 (XBox 360/XInput & PS2/PS3 Controllers)

Post by Kloreep »

Image

I didn't see the kind of profile I wanted for Mass Effect 1 - something similar to Mass Effect 2's XBox layout - so I made one. While ME2 XBox was the basis for the layout, there are changes made to accomodate the PC's greater number of hotkeys, and Xpadder's own contributions to what's possible - not to mention the differences in ME1's controls themselves.

Comparing the XInput and Playstation profiles, you may note shoulder buttons/triggers are flipped upside down between them. This seems to be the convention for many console games (ME2 included), and it makes sense to me, given the difference in design between shoulder buttons and triggers on the XBox vs. the Playstation.

Tip: The Dpad can be used to play the hacking mini-game. If you find DPad Forward advances rings too slowly, try using R-Trigger/R1 instead.

You will need to make these binding changes in the game.
(Go to Options -> Settings -> Controls)
[General]
-Change Primary Tactics HUD key to [Shift]
[Navigation]
-Change Primary Storm key to [Spacebar]
[Weapons]
-Add Secondary Change Zoom Level key [L] (Enables sniper rifle zoom for L-Button/L2, R-Stick/R3)
[Vehicle]
-Add Secondary Turret Zoom Key [L] (Enables turret zoom for L-Button/L2, R-Stick/R3)

Swapping the primary HUD and Storm keys does, of course, mean you have to use them in those altered positions if you use the keyboard. The change helps the Mako controls perform as specified, with Thrust on the A button and the Right Button being one way to zoom. This is how these keys are set up by default in ME2, anyhow, and I personally think that Bioware made that change for the better. Why not bring it backwards into ME1?

If you are using an XBox 360/XInput controller, you will need to download an additional file to correct a bug.
ME1 has some half-remaining gamepad support that will cause some glitchy behavior, such as the camera seizing up during some in-game movements like a hard left. Primal Fear figured out how to correct this, and the details are in this post. See it for details, and give Primal a ThankYou while you're there. :)
If you are using a non-XInput controller, I think this won't be an issue, but I'm not certain of that. I'd appreciate confirmation from someone who has a non-XInput pad.

If you like this profile, I've made a similar one for Mass Effect 2.

Layout changes in r2 2011/02/06 since r1 2010/07/10:
-Moved Quick Save from R-Button + Back to R-Button + Start (matching ME2 profile change)
-R-Button + L-Stick now always toggles walk speed - no need to hold it. Crouching can now only be done with X
-Removed 2nd set (while X held set). Now there is only one while-held set switch, so no one should run in to the bug that can surface with more than one. It was removed by doing the following:
-Hotkeys for all four guns now accessible on the D-pad when holding R-Button, just like when X was held before
-Next Weapon/Previous Weapon commands are gone, but since all four weapons are hotkeyed they aren't all that necessary
-Grenades are now fired by clicking R-Stick while holding R-Button (Ugh. But where else to put them while maintaining consistency with ME2 profile?)
-Equipment screen can now be accessed by holding R-Button and X, which brings it in line with the other menu shortcuts anyhow (previously was X + Back)
-X's only function now is crouching

Things to possibly add in the future, but aren't possible as of Xpadder 2011.02.02:
-Analog movement speed on the left stick, so that you don't have to manually toggle between movement speeds. (Needs more functionality for distance zones.)
-The return of "Hold X for weapon-related things"? (If the buggy behavior with more than one while-held set is fixed, perhaps. For now, X and R-Button are too often used together to have both switching sets.)
-An additional Set for menu navigation to reduce button presses and cursor use for certain actions, e.g. omni-gelling equipment. (Needs mouse cursor positioning.)

Using this profile I'm finding that when I double click the rb button on the pad it's getting stuck on group 3, and I keep doing it by accident while playing - it's very annoying because i have to quit out the game to set it back! I can't seem to work out how to stop it from doing it?

Oh dear... I eliminate one set to eliminate the getting-stuck-in-a-set problem, and it still comes around to haunt me!

I can duplicate this, you're definitely not alone. It has to be a fast double-tap, but it's still a pretty sizable window. I'm yet not sure whether this is the same sort of bug, and whether/how this can be fixed on the profile's end, but I'll see if I can suss any of that out.

Thanks for posting. :)

no worries, I wasn't sure if it was an xpadder bug or the profile, but if I create a brand new blank profile and just assign the rb button to hold for set 3, it doesn't seem to do it? thanks for looking, I can't figuire it out but then xpadder is quite tricky for me to use and I just don't have time anymore to sit down at my pc much :-( it's a shame because it's a great profile and I have been getting into mass effect finally (bought it 3 years ago and never even played it till now) on the sofa with the TV and HTPC. Hope you can work out the glitch!

Known bug, it seems. And in a thread I myself posted in some time ago. So much for my memory, ha! :)

It seems that, like the other while-held set selection bug I already avoided by paring down to 2 sets, this one is only going to get fixed by the SlotMachine upgrade. I'll see about putting a work-around in the profile until then, though I'm not sure how workable that will be. Seems the bug is caused by the hair-trigger timing involved, which is something of the point in this case - if you want to use one of the while-held functions, like the higher-numbered hotkey powers, it currently switches to them in almost no time.

Following Jonathan's advice in the linked thread, reducing Key Tap Time all the way down to 0.01 seconds seems to do the trick.

I haven't yet tested that this creates no problems in the game, so I'm not going to alter the posted profiles just yet, but you can easily change this setting in Xpadder yourself. Click on the toolbar to the right of the profile name. (Top right in the below image.)
Image

This will bring up the profile's Key Tap Time setting. It will probably be at 0.10 by default. Reduce it all the way down to 0.01.

Like I said, I haven't yet made sure that ME1 will pick up on key taps with this lower timing. (Though I don't see why not.) But I am pretty certain it fixes Xpadder's double-tap problem with while-held.

Easiest way would probably be to turn down the mouse sensitivity in ME1's options. (I think ME1 allows you to change sensitivity. I think one of the games does not, but I believe that's ME2.)

Alternately, you could also change the cursor speed in the profile, on the settings menu for the aiming stick.

I just installed xpadder and programmed the buttons to play that wonderful game. The controller works for the computer, but it doesn't work when I turn the game on. What wrong?

Try to run Xpadder as Admin, because of Windows UAC.

For some reason only the triggers and analog sticks are working for me. None of the other buttons do anything. Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

I just wanted to thank you SO much for this! Playing this game on a controller is absolutely FAB!

A question though - I've heard a lot of complaints about not being able to play Windows default games - like the ones where you can use the controller without any issues as it's been set that way (like Left For Dead) won't work if using xpad...is there a fix for that, or what should I do?

Thanks and really glad to be in this forum! :)

Having a slight issue with the left stick (movement stick) on my Logitech F710. For some reason pushing it both left and right makes my character move to the left. Is this a known issue with a fix? Anyone else encountered this problem?

That shouldn't be possible.

Does the left stick do something in the game, when you don't have a profile loaded in Xpadder?
Does is normally work when you use the keyboard?

Hello, ive finally started mass effect so i can play parts 2 and 3 later, however with this profile when im moving forward with the left analog stick on the the ps2 controller and i just barely push up on the right analog stick, my character will automatically aim for the sky and i would have to stop and aim back down. What would cause this and is there a fix? Thankyou
